SEPPA, Apr 30: Election at Panchayat level will be a thing of the past for Pipu and Gyawepu- rang circles under East Kameng (EK) district.
The Pipu Gyawepurang Social Organisation (PGSO) has decided to bid the electoral process goodbye and select candidates by consensus among the people of the two circles to avoid “complicacies” among the contestants.
“During Panchayat elections, family ties are strained as relatives end up contesting each other from different parties. Corruption too takes birth in such elections,” PGSO chief advisor cum Arunachal Press Club president Chopa Cheda said during a day-long awareness campaign held here on Saturday.
Competent candidates, dedicated to the uplift of the two circles, could be selected through this move with approval from the people, he added.
The campaign concluded with the unanimous adoption of a resolution for selection of Panchayat candidates instead of elections from the next Panchayat election in these circles.
“It is indeed a positive step initiated by PGSO to clean up corruption at grassroots level,” Saju Gyadi, ex-ASM of Gyawepurang circle, said.
If this move is emulated by others, the day is not far away when people will witness a developed Arunachal,” he added.
PGSO chairman Raya Flago said that the selection of Gram Panchayats and ASMs under these two circles would be made by clan-based societies along with PGSO members, while ZPMs would be selected through a research committee to be
constituted involving senior leaders, intellectuals and clan-based societies under the aegis of PGSO. PGSO meanwhile, urged the MLA of 9 Chayang Tajo and potential candidates for the next election to the assembly seat not to interfere with or violate the resolution. Violation of the resolution would be viewed seriously and the members of PGSO including intellectuals of the circles would oppose the contesting MLA candidates, he warned. Pipu ZPM Meyuk Cheda, Gyawepurang ZPM Demo Gyadi, ex-ZPMs Rojo Cheda and Sono Cheda, ex-ASM Chasop Flago and all the ASMs, GPMs, intellectuals, officers and youths from both the circles attended the awareness camp.
