ITANAGAR, Feb, 23: State Home Minister Kumar Waii, Animal Husbandry, Veterinary and Dairy Development Minister, Dr Mohesh Chai and RD Minister Alo Libang on Friday visited Yingkiong and Tezu to study the ground reality and law and order situation in both districts.
The ministers held a meeting at Yingkiong with police personnel and the local Peace Keeping Committee (PKC) where the locals submitted a memorandum to the state government.
The memorandum included the demand to bring back rapist Holvi Sema of Nagaland to the Yingkiong judiciary, suspension of the then superintendent of police and officer-in-charge, submission of charge sheet to the court and completion of case within two months with government aid to the victim who is in hospital now.
Waii told The Arunachal Pioneer that, for now, the law and order situation in both districts is normal and that he has asked the police to nab the main culprit indulged in burning the police station at Yingkiong.
Referring to the memorandum, he said there is no need to shift the case to Yingkiong. The suspension of SP and OC will be decided after
thorough discussion and investigation by PKC with police officials.
“The grant for aid and compensation shall be the top priority of the government. I will inform the grievances to the state chief minister and make sure the family of the victim, a minor, gets more incentives,” he said.
The minor is in a critical condition at General Hospital, Pasighat.
“The series of rape cases is a shame to the state and the people. The people who indulge in such crimes will never be excused and police personnel found guilty will be suspended as per law,” Waii said.
An officer at Yingkiong PS said the mob was too large for the small force to handle, and they burned all documents since the 1990s along with five computers and a police vehicle. “The principal of the school, M. Pradhan has been arrested and kept in remand now. The principal was arrested because he knew about the incident but kept mum that day,” he said.
The state government has deployed additional forces to keep the situation in check. A commando platoon of Central Reserve Force Police and 5th Battalion of IRBn has been deployed so far, the officer added.
The people of Yingkiong, meanwhile, have been baying for the rapist’s blood. “We are not satisfied with the government for shifting to Aalo judiciary. We want the government to address the people in public avoiding closed door meeting,” an angry woman said.
Waii also visited Tezu where he inspected the police station from where the mob had lynched two rapists on February 19. He asked the SP in-charge to find out and punish the main people behind the lynching.
In a brief meeting with members of the victims’ family at Tezu Guest House, Waii assured compensation from the government.
Police officials said the situation in Tezu is normal now. Prohibitory orders have been relaxed during the day, they added.
