ITANAGAR, Mar 22: The Jairampur Battalion of Assam Rifles under the aegis of DAO division apprehended two cadres of the ULFA (Independent) from Koriapani village at Jagun near Assam-Arunachal border Tuesday night.
Based on specific inputs about the presence of the ultras in the village who were trying to terrorize the people through extortion bids, the personnel of the troop conducted a successful operation in the village and arrested Bitu Rajbanshi and Bitul Shimpo, Defence PRO Colonel Chiranjeet Konwer informed in a communiqué today.
A pistol, live ammunition and extortion notes were recovered from the possession of the arrested rebels.
The cadres hail from Hasak village in Assam’s Tinsukia district.
On interrogation the duo admitted allegiance to ULFA (I). Rajvanshi further divulged that he had been an active cadre of the banned outfit and had undergone training at Kaching training camp in Myanmar. It is also learnt that Rajvanshi was also involved in guiding the CORCOM cadres responsible for Pengri attacks, the communiqué added.
