TAWANG, May 10: The 7th Bihar Regiment rescued 64 people who were stranded between Bumla and Klemta in Tawang district due to unexpected blizzard condition on Tuesday.

The incident occurred at an altitude of 15,000 feet near 7th Bihar Battalion’s headquarters that is the only road to the strategic town of Tawang, said local resident Mindu Tsering and added that sudden snowfall has affected transportation.

The toughest task for the soldiers was to climb vertically through alternative route to reach the stranded tourists in order to carry out rescue operation. The soldiers risked their lives to provide medical aid and oxygen cylinder to the tourists besides taking them to safety, locals said.

Army vehicles were arranged arranged to send the tourists back to Tawang safely. The tourists included 21 women and 19 children, an official said. “The situation could have been much worse had the soldiers not acted fast,” he added.
