ZIRO, Apr 24: The fifth edition of state level Subroto Mukherjee football tournament, also known as Subroto Cup got off to a flying start here at the Hija Ground on Monday with local MLA Tage Taki officially inaugurating it.
Terming the current generation of players fortunate for getting facilities in terms of training, infrastructures, Taki he advised the players to maintain sportsman spirit and use the opportunity to exchange ideas and techniques, so that Arunachal wins the Subroto trophy at the National level as well.
Secondary Education joint director Moto Nyori in his address said that the tournament is an opportunity for all the players to showcase their skills and get noticed for bigger tournaments.
"Disciplined players have a long way to go. A disciplined player will be disciplined in life as well," he added and warned the players against any in-disciplinary activities during the entire tournament.
Nyori further expressed gratitude to the district administration and the locals of Ziro for their cooperation in arranging the tournament logistics in a very short notice.
Lower Subansiri DC in-charge Nending Chatung while addressing the players exhorted them to play with true sportsmanship and take back home good memoirs of the tournament.
Three prominent former players of the district namely IRBN deputy commandant Lod Tabyo, Mudo Nikang and Toko Bak were felicitated also on the occasion.
14 teams from schools across the state will battle for the trophy in the next 6 days while a total of eight matches would be played in the Hija and Tajang playgrounds.
The opening match played between Tirap and Longding saw the former thrash the latter by 3 goals to nil.
Subroto Cup is one of the famous inter-school football tournaments to be played in India. The winners of state level competition would represent the state in the national level. DIPRO
