Strengthening Indo-Sino ties

TAP | Updated: October 3, 2018

The life of borderlanders is diverse than it seems when  viewed away from the border areas. Border does signify  the Us-Them divide and is construed in a legal line definition.
The understanding of border when it comes to international boundaries is that of a political construct. An international boundary like that of Indo-China border has hogged the limelight for decades together. State like Arunachal Pradesh has always been known as a disputed territory, whether one accepts it or not.
The border personnel meeting (BPM) that was organised in Tawang district recently by the Chinese Army, on the occasion of the Chinese National Day is a way forward. It not only promotes much needed peace and tranquillity across the border but also strengthen border ties. Many a times military ties at the border become reason for undue restlessness submerging both nations to counter-cross counter. In situation like this it is the representatives (the care takers of the border) that on frequent consultation should control misleading flow of information.
Activity like unfurling of the national flags of both the countries reflects friendship and commitment. To maintain peace along the Line of Actual Control, such activities are a must. Strategically important point of connect should incorporate more BPM points.
BPM needs to be a regular one at that as it will not only give the personnel representing their countries the chance to understand the prevailing situation but will also help in bringing certain fundamental changes in terms of maintaining status quo. This way both sides will recognise each other’s standpoint and come up with proper mechanism.
BPMs will go a long way in fortifying the sensitive international border merely if it is not restricted to words and gestures but a common policy of hailing ‘Peace’.
