ITANAGAR, Jun 24: Arunachal Pradesh Governor PB Acharya on Saturday congratulated the people of East Siang district on selection of Pasighat, the district headquarters, under Centre's Smart City Mission.

Union Minister for Urban Development Venkaiah Naidu made the announcement of 30 new smart cities in New Delhi on Friday.

Acharya in a statement said centennial town Pasighat, one of the foremost educational hubs of the erstwhile NEFA, deserved to be included in the list.

He expressed confidence that the first town of the state would now lay a new benchmark for excellence in standard of life, healthcare and educational facilities and basic infrastructure.

The governor said that Smart City Mission would drive overall economic growth and thereby improving the quality of life of people by enabling local decentralization for better local area development and harnessing green technology, especially technology that leads to smart outcomes.

“Specific area-based development will transform existing areas into better planned ones, thereby improving liveability of the whole city. New areas will be suitably developed in order to accommodate the expanding population in urban areas. Application of smart solutions will enable cities to use technology, information and data to improve infrastructure and services,” he said.

“Comprehensive development in this way will improve standard of life by creating employment and enhancing incomes for all, especially the poor and the disadvantaged, leading to inclusive Cities,” Acharya said.

The governor hoped that capital city of Itanagar, which is under consideration, will be picked up in the ensuing selection for which he sought the support of all stakeholders.
