Los Angeles, Jul 22: Let’s get dangerous! Darkwing Duck, the mysterious mallard superhero who headlined his own 1991 animated series as part of the beloved Disney Afternoon lineup, will swing his way into Duckburg on Disney XD’s upcoming revival of DuckTales.
The creators of the series reboot broke the news when they debuted a reel of sneak peek footage during the show’s packed panel at San Diego Comic-Con on Friday; in it, a brief sighting of Darkwing Duck concept art confirmed the character’s appearance in the series — and had fans in the audience absolutely quacking (sorry) about the buzzy reveal. Darkwing’s motorcycle, the Ratcatcher, and his rat nemesis, Megavolt, were also glimpsed during the quick peek.
Executive producer Matt Youngberg and co-producer/story editor Francisco Angones first addressed the possibility of the character’s inclusion at Disney’s D23 convention the previous weekend. At Comic-Con, they stayed tight-lipped about how DuckTales plans to incorporate the character, how often or how prominently he might appear, and whether we’ll get our first glimpse at him in the one-hour Aug. 12 premiere (a standalone TV movie titled “Woo-oo!”) or in the official series itself, which debuts Sept. 23.
Darkwing Duck was originally developed as a spin-off from DuckTales, but the key link in his return is likely Launchpad McQuack (Beck Bennett), the personal pilot to Scrooge (David Tennant) and a series regular on the new DuckTales revival. In the canon of Darkwing Duck, Launchpad is the sidekick and housemate of the titular hero and one of the only people who knows that mild-mannered Drake Mallard moonlights as the shadowy crime-fighter.
