Baghmara College Celebrates Silver Jubilee

TURA,Dec 08: Having served the educational needs of the region for 25 long years, the Silver Jubilee of Captain Williamson Memorial College in Baghmara of South Garo Hills was celebrated in the college premises on Thursday.
The college, which came into being in the year 1992 with an aim to provide higher education to the people of Baghmara and its adjoining areas, was the outcome of the efforts of former Meghalaya minister, Late Lotsing A Sangma, then deputy commissioner of the district, P S Thankiew, BDO of Baghmara, J D Sangma and other elderly citizens.In the beginning, the college functioned temporarily until the 1999 when it first received grant in aid from the government. 
It was finally provicialised in 2011, but till today continues to face difficulties in terms of infrastructure and filling up of vacancies of various lecturers.Speaking on the occasion, GHADC CEM, Boston Ch Marak who was the chief guest assured full support and help from his side in whatever possible way he can.
 He said that education is like sowing a seed for a lifetime and nobody can take away knowledge one has acquired. He added that the need of the hour is to give top priority to education to ensure that the future generation takes the region ahead. 
He also made an appeal to the teaching fraternity of the college to uphold their professional integrity and strive harder to make the institution more productive.Earlier, the Chief Guest also released the Jubilee Souvenir and also felicitated the first governing body of the college.
The Silver Jubilee celebration also saw the participation of GHADC deputy CEM, Wenison Ch Marak, Director of Higher and Technical Education (Retd), J D Marak and other district officials.The Shillong Times
