ITANAGAR, Jul 06: The Longding Battalion of Assam Rifles under Dao Division apprehended an NSCN (R) rebel from Mintong Village of the district on Wednesday.

Kohima-based defence spokesperson Col Chiranjit Konwer said that capture of the rebel, identified as self-styled soldier Chawang Wangsa, was the outcome of an intensified crackdown on militant activities in the district.

Specific intelligence inputs led to his arrest while trying to terrorise people and attempting extortion. A pistol and ammunition were recovered from him.

During interrogation, Wangsa admitted he has been an active member of NSCN (R) since 2013.

The security forces have been carrying out aggressive operations in south Arunachal Pradesh, striking a blow to the extortion activities of the underground cadres of the group in the area, the spokesperson said.
