Web series are a threat to films, not TV: Vipul

Ahmedabad, May 24: Actor Vipul Gupta says Indian television has nothing to worry about the popularity of web series as he feels the small screen will never lose its loyal viewers to the digital medium.
“I was a part of one of the most successful web series called ‘Maaya’, which was directed by Vikram Bhatt. Now, big names from the films are showing interest in the medium of web series. But I think television won’t lose its audience. I think films are in a bit of jeopardy,” Vipul told the reporters here.
The 41-year-old actor will be seen playing one of the main Aryan warriors, Abrook in Star Plus’ upcoming fantasy epic series “Aarambh”.
He was earlier seen in 2005’s TV show “India Calling” and in films like “Yeh Saali Zindagi”.
Vipul says he is happy to star in a finite series like “Aarambh” as the artistes know there is a start and there is an end to this heavy-budget project.
“We have been talking about taking TV to another level.
It will be a break from the never-ending saas-bahu sagas. We know we are doing ‘x’ number of episodes. I see it as a good thing. You make your money, do good work and move forward.
Finite series is here to stay,” he says.
Talking about his character, Vipul says it is a very real role, which is “neither dark nor light. He has all the shades which we humans have”.
“Aarambh” has been penned by “Baahubali” screenwriter KV Vijayendra Prasad but the actor says that is not the reason behind him choosing to do the show.
“I was happy to work with Goldie again, who gave me my first big hit serial ‘India Calling’. He is a big reason for doing this show.
“Vijayendra sir was the icing on the cake. It is not just the ‘Baahubali’ series but he also has ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’ to his credit. PTI
