ITANAGAR, Sep 16: The Banderdewa Police, with the assistance of Sikkim Police, apprehended Kalu Chetry alias Tenzing Tsering, a 28-year-old resident of Tawang, in Gangtok, Sikkim on September 15.
Chetry, was wanted in connection with a kidnapping case registered under Banderdewa Police Station (C/No.31/24) under sections 364(A) and 34 of the IPC, read with Section 25(1)(a) of the Arms Act.
On May 4, 2024, Chetry, along with three accomplices, lured a woman to the PTC Gate in Banderdewa under the pretext of selling local ornaments. The woman, prepared to make the purchase, was forced into a vehicle and taken to a secluded area near the Assam border.
She was threatened with a pistol and robbed of ₹3 lakh, after which the criminals fled towards Assam.
Following the incident, the Banderdewa Police launched an intensive search operation, eventually tracing Chetry's movements to Gangtok. A coordinated operation between the Banderdewa Police and the Sikkim Police led to his arrest.
The operation was led by a team from Banderdewa Police Station, including sub-inspector Koj Tada, constables Tade Bomdan and Tanik Hichik and lady constable Kago Yamung, with support from the Gangtok Sardar Police Station.
The team operated under the supervision of Naharlagun SP Mihin Gambo and Banderdewa police station officer-in-charge Kipa Hamak.
“Chetry has been brought back to Banderdewa for further investigation. Initial inquiries revealed his involvement in multiple cases of theft and cheating related to local ornaments,” SP Gambo.
