Pasighat hosts girl child awareness prog

PASIGHAT, Oct 10: A 10-day special programme to commemorate the International Day of the Girl Child organised by the East Siang Women and Child Development department came to a successful end here on Thursday.

The event held at Government Gandhi Secondary School here aimed to highlight the challenges faced by girls and promote gender equality.

Addressing the valedictory function, DDSE Odhuk Tabing commended the Women and Child Development department for organizing such awareness programmes in schools while ICDS deputy director Machi Gao emphasized the importance of supporting girls’ education, nutrition, legal rights, and protection from discrimination.

Gao informed the gathering about the aims of the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao (BBBP) scheme, which includes reducing the child sex ratio (CSR), empowering women, promoting their participation in education, eliminating gender-based inequalities, changing citizens' mindsets, and improving welfare services for girls.

Advocate Nayame Dabi, Para Legal Advisor at the One Stop Centre (OSC), delivered a lecture on child rights, the POCSO Act of 2012, and three recently enacted criminal laws.

School principal Tari Koyu, also addressed the gathering, urging students to be punctual and to learn from the valuable insights gained during the awareness programme.

The event was attended by a total of 160 students and 25 teaching staff from Government Gandhi Secondary School, along with staff from the ICDS, district child protection unit and OSC.
