For a trouble free access to net (EDITORIAL)

TAP | Updated: September 27, 2018

The 'Vision Document for Digital North East 2022’ that was launched this year underlined plans for high speed broadband connectivity in all the uncovered villages in the NE region. With this eight digital thrust areas were identified- digital infrastructure, digital services, digital empowerment, promotion of electronics manufacturing, promotion of IT and IT enabled services including BPOs, digital payments, innovation & startups, and cyber security. If these areas are improved,  the region will benefit and be empowered in significant sectors.
Similarly, taking note of the growing need for internet service even in academic affairs,  the Reliance Jio as part of their corporate social responsibility will be setting up free WiFi service inside the university’s campus. The MoU was signed with
Reliance Jio Infocom Ltd on Wednesday which is expected to be commissioned by January 2019.
It was also informed that digital contents under the digital initiatives of the Government of India, like SWAYAM, SWAYAM Prabha, NPTEL, etc can be accessed seamlessly by the students and faculty members without charges. Undoubtedly a step closer to realising the Centre's dream of a 'Digital India'.
However the clouds of uncertainty still prevails over the strength of the network.  As most of the areas in and around the twin capital cities are not properly covered by the Jio service. This should not be the case with the university. The network should provide high speed connectivity for a free flow access to digital journal sections. Telecommunication and internet services are important aspects of socio-economic development and a great leveler for civilization in present day. As such it's also important to spread its tentacles in the education sector.
India being world’s second largest telecommunication market under its National Telecom Policy can help overcome all kinds of developmental challenges in terms of connectivity.
North East as such should not be left behind and with the recent MoU signed with educational institutes like Rajiv Gandhi University,  Patkai Christian College, Nagaland so on, time is opportune for timely implementation of telecom projects in the region to ensure smooth rollout of IT and e-governance initiatives.
