Allegations of poll malpractices in Raga, calls for re-poll

ITANAGAR, Apr 22: Ajay Murtem, a contesting candidate from Raga assembly constituency, has formally requested a re-poll citing multiple instances of alleged electoral fraud and voter intimidation during the assembly elections held on April 19.

In a detailed letter addressed to the district election officer of Kamle, Murtem alleged widespread irregularities across 14 polling stations.

According to Murtem, the election day was marred by serious violations including bogus voting, vote capturing, and threats to voters, with incidents particularly concentrated in areas such as Paro, Kherbari, and Yorkum. In one instance, the candidate alleged that Gocham Yubey and his family were kidnapped to prevent them from voting in the Gaa polling station, indicating a breach of fundamental rights.

Murtem's allegations implicate supporters and polling agents of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), accusing them of creating an atmosphere of fear and coercion, thus undermining the electoral process. "These actions not only violate the principles of free and fair elections but also pose a threat to the democratic fabric of our society," Murtem stated in his letter.

The candidate has urged the election authorities to conduct a thorough investigation, including the review of CCTV footage from the affected polling stations. He emphasized the need for a re-poll to restore voter confidence and ensure the integrity of the electoral process.

The demand for a re-poll underscores the critical challenges in maintaining electoral integrity in regions with contentious political climates. Election authorities have yet to respond to Murtem's requests, but the call for action highlights the ongoing struggle to uphold democratic principles in every corner of the nation.
