DC seeks expertise to curb illegal mining

ITANAGAR, May 08: Itanagar Capital Region (ICR) deputy commissioner Shweta Nagarkoti Mehta has sought technical expertise to check illegal mining activities in affected places in Itanagar.

In a coordination meeting with senior district officials and other stakeholders to chalk-out an action plan for preventive measures in mining affected areas, the DC expressed concern over rampant illegal mining activities in the city despite several orders from the district administration.

In view of the monsoon season, Nagarkoti said it is important to take precautionary measures to reduce the risks in mining affected areas.

The DC also sought technical guidance to streamline the permission process for the notified quarries.

She urged all to put a collaborative effort on putting a stop on such illegal activities, in view of the monsoon.

The DC emphasised the importance of vulnerable mapping and monitoring in order to keep an eye on the vulnerable locations that could be prone to disaster.

Arunachal Pradesh Space Application Centre (APSAC) director H K Dutta said the agency will help in providing the vulnerable mapping and categorising the areas which are prone to disaster.

The meeting was attended by Itanagar additional deputy commissioner in-charge Datum Gadi, representatives of department of geology and mining, disaster management, and department of earth sciences and Himalayan studies.
