East Siang gears up for Southwest Monsoon

PASIGHAT, Apr 30: East Siang deputy commissioner Tayi Taggu on Tuesday chaired a meeting to assess the monsoon preparedness of all departments ahead of the impending Southwest Monsoon.

The meeting, held at the DC’s office, emphasized the timely submission of departmental emergency plans to update the District Disaster Management Plan (DDMP) for effective prevention and mitigation.

During the meeting, Taggu addressed concerns regarding waterlogging and flooding during the monsoon. He instructed the urban development department and other relevant agencies to clear stagnant or waterlogged city drains in Pasighat to prevent flooding and curb the spread of waterborne and vector-borne diseases.

He also called for daily water level monitoring amidst increasing rainfall.

Various aspects of disaster preparedness were reviewed, including the availability of essential medicines, food stocks, relief shelters, and emergency plans for essential services such as fire services, public health engineering, power, transport, water resources department, highways, and public works department.

The meeting also discussed manpower, machinery, equipment, communication plans, and public awareness initiatives in the context of monsoon preparedness.

Taggu highlighted the importance of the water resources department's daily water level monitoring of the Siang River and timely sharing of hydrological data and daily flood reports, emphasizing coordination with the Central Water Commission (CWC).

He also stressed the need for coordination and support from the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), army, paramilitary forces, and other stakeholders.

Earlier, district disaster management officer T Tashi briefed attendees on the roles of nodal officers of respective departments under the district disaster management authority (DDMA), with the DC as the responsible officer, the Additional DC (Headquarters) as the incident commander, and the superintendent of police as the safety officer.

Representatives from the Army, BRO, CRPF, administrative officers, and department heads attended the meeting.
