TAP | Updated: April 30, 2024

ITANAGAR, Apr 30: Thunderstorms accompanied by light to heavy rain are expected to hit Arunachal Pradesh and other northeastern states over the next few days, as per the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

Despite the monsoon being at least a month away, Northeast India has been experiencing monsoon-like heavy rainfall over the past few weeks, with forecasts indicating intensifying conditions as May approaches.

Several cyclonic circulations near Assam are expected to bring intense downpours to the northeastern region in the coming days.

The IMD predicts light to moderate rain or snow over most parts of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura from Monday to Friday (April 29 - May 3).

Thunderstorms, accompanied by lightning and gusty winds, may also occur in some areas during this period.

The situation is expected to worsen, with heavy rain forecasted for some sections of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, and Meghalaya till tomorrow (April 29-30), and over the remaining northeastern states on Wednesday (May 1).

Furthermore, heavy to very heavy showers are anticipated over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, and Meghalaya from Wednesday to Thursday (May 1-2), and over Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura on Thursday.

The IMD has also predicted extremely heavy downpours over Assam and Meghalaya on Thursday.

Considering these forecasts, a yellow watch has been issued for all northeastern states from Monday to Friday (April 29 - May 3), except for Arunachal Pradesh on Friday.

Despite the recent rainfall, the entire northeastern region is still facing precipitation deficiencies this month.

Between March 1 and April 28, Arunachal Pradesh received 339 mm of rainfall (24% below normal), while Assam and Meghalaya together received 138 mm (44% below normal).

The remaining northeastern states received only 105 mm (44% below normal).
