IMD issues orange alert for NE states

TAP | Updated: May 5, 2024

ITANAGAR, May 05: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted heavy rainfall in several northeastern states from May 5 to 7.

According to the IMD, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura are likely to experience isolated heavy rainfall, with Meghalaya facing extreme heavy rainfall on May 6.

Additionally, IMD has predicted fairly widespread light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds (40-50kmph) in these states and Sikkim over the next five days.

The IMD attributes these weather patterns to a cyclonic circulation over Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, another over Marathwada, and a trough running from Meghalaya to the cyclonic circulation over Marathwada in the lower tropospheric levels.

Strong southwesterly winds from the Bay of Bengal to the Northeast are expected at lower tropospheric levels on May 5-6.

Meanwhile, the intensity of the heat wave in eastern and parts of southern peninsular India has slightly decreased on Saturday, with the weather office predicting relief from the scorching conditions in these regions after two days.
