Tobacco control raid near Nirjuli schools

ITANAGAR, May 08: The Flying Squad of the Itanagar Capital Region (ICR) District Tobacco Control Cell, on Wednesday conducted a surprise checking drive and raided shops near NERIST and other educational areas at Nirjuli under the provisions of Sections 6(a) and 6(b) of Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA).

The squad, comprising Naharlagun CO Nani Mamung, DTCC district consultant and a police team from Nirjuli, successfully seized a significant amount of cigarettes, other tobacco products, and illegally sold alcohol from various shops located within a 100-meter radius of educational institutions.

All shop owners found violating Sections 6(a) and (b) COTPA were fined Rs 200 each and warned against further sale of any tobacco products near educational institutions.

They were instructed to comply with COTPA regulations to help youths lead tobacco-free lives and contribute to a tobacco-free society and environment.

At the conclusion of the surprise checking, all seized items were burnt and disposed of at Dikrong riverside in Nirjuli.
