ITANAGAR, Apr 24: The path to success in football is often paved with challenges. Many players must persevere in academies and lower leagues before they earn their chance at the professional level.

Gyamar Nikum of Inter Kashi, however, has experienced a rapid ascent through the ranks over the last three years. The 19-year-old's remarkable improvement culminated in him being named the Best Emerging Player of the season in the I-League.

"I was in my hometown where we have limited network access, so I had no idea about the award initially," said Nikum, who hails from Kurung Kumey, a small town on the Indo-China border in Arunachal Pradesh.

He learned of the honor a day later, thanks to his friends.

"I went to an area with better network coverage to confirm it. Everyone was thrilled when I told them."

Despite his young age, Nikum has quickly made an impact. Before the current season, he had not played a full season. However, in the I-League, he played 22 matches for Inter Kashi, scoring four goals and providing four assists.

In 2021, Nikum joined Rajasthan United, playing one and a half seasons before moving to Mumbai City FC in January 2023. With limited playing time in a team competing for the Indian Super League title, he went on loan to Inter Kashi, a move that proved transformative.

"This was my best season so far. I didn't get many chances to play in my first season at Rajasthan United, but I think I performed well in the next season, which led to my opportunity at Mumbai," he explained. "Getting a full season was crucial."

Nikum praised the support he received at Inter Kashi, attributing much of his growth to the club's environment. Despite a challenging start, Inter Kashi finished fourth in the I-League, ending the season on an 11-match unbeaten streak.

Nikum's journey from a small town to professional football serves as inspiration for aspiring players in Arunachal Pradesh. "The passion for football in Arunachal Pradesh is immense. I believe there are many talented players there who can reach the top level," he remarked.

At just 19, Nikum has become a role model for young footballers in Arunachal Pradesh. "I would love to see more players from my state play in the I-League or ISL.

I receive many calls from parents unsure about their children's footballing paths," he shared. "Even if some make it to academies and clubs after seeing me, I would consider that a success."
