NAHARLAGUN, Apr 25: World Malaria Day, an annual global event observed on April 25 to acknowledge worldwide efforts in combating malaria, was celebrated with great enthusiasm at the directorate of health services here on Thursday.

This year's theme, "Accelerate the fight against malaria for a more equitable world," underscores the ongoing efforts to eliminate malaria and educate communities about prevention.

The event was graced by three directors of the health department, namely Marge Sora, Dr Riken Rina, and Dr Wangdi Lama, along with former director Dr Moromor Lego.

The celebration began with a presentation by state project officer Dr K T Mulung on the prevention, control, and management of malaria cases.

Dr Rina stressed the importance of malaria prevention and led a pledge on malaria awareness, uniting all officers and officials of the DHS in a commitment to combat the disease.

Sora emphasized the need to translate programs into successful district initiatives and praised the state malaria control division, led by Dr K T Mulung, for its effective grassroots-level program implementations.

Dr Lego introduced an engaging malaria slogan and urged the program division to sustain their vigilance and commitment, cautioning against complacency.

With an Annual Parasite Index (API) below 1 and zero malaria-related deaths over the past seven years, Dr Lego stressed the importance of maintaining efforts.

The event highlighted everyone's commitment to fighting malaria, acknowledging the progress made so far and the goal of making Arunachal Pradesh malaria-free in the future.

The East Siang district health society also observed World Malaria Day at Bakin Pertin General Hospital (BPGH) in Pasighat.

Notably, no cases of malaria have been detected in East Siang district in the last three years, making it eligible to be declared malaria-free.

The occasion featured a rally by B.Sc. Nursing students from Government Nursing College Pasighat and ANM students from HTRC Pasighat, flagged off by BPGH Medical Superintendent Dr Y R Darang and East Siang DMO Dr. Komling Perme.

Earlier, district vector borne disease control officer Dr Keni Lego briefed the gathering on the epidemiology of malaria, followed by an oath-taking ceremony to promote cleanliness in the surroundings.

World Malaria Day was also celebrated in various parts of the state on Thursday.
