RONO HILLS, Apr 26: The three-day science academies’ lecture workshop on ‘Contemporary Topics in Chemical Sciences’ organized by the Rajiv Gandhi University’s (RGU) department of chemistry, concluded on Tuesday.

Over 120 undergraduate and post-graduate students, research scholars, and faculty from various colleges, universities, and institutes of Arunachal Pradesh and Assam participated in the event.

The workshop, held from April 24 to 26, was organized in collaboration with the Joint Science Education Panel of three science academies: the Indian Academy of Sciences (IASc) Bengaluru, the Indian National Science Academy (INSA) New Delhi, and The National Academy of Sciences India (NASI) Allahabad.

The event provided a platform for students, research scholars, and young faculty members to interact with eminent academy fellows from institutions such as the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bengaluru, the Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science (IACS) Kolkata, and IIT Bombay, who are actively involved in teaching and research in chemical sciences.

The inaugural day featured an invigorating address by Prof Pushpendu K Das from IISc Bengaluru, chairperson of the Joint Science Education Panel, who emphasized the workshop's role in advancing chemical science in Arunachal Pradesh.

RGU vice-chancellor Prof Saket Kushwaha highlighted the workshop's aim to reach out to bright young minds and encouraged students to take advantage of summer intern fellowships. University registrar Dr N T Rikam noted RGU's efforts in teaching and research despite challenges, including the establishment of a Central Instrumentation Facility (CIF) to accelerate research in the region.

Subsequent sessions covered diverse topics such as molecules that seem to ‘defy rules’, nanotechnology, enzymes, antimicrobial materials, biopolymers, and chemical reaction rates. Professors Uday Maitra, Somobrata Acharya, Ruchi Anand and Suhrit Ghosh and Dr Anindita Das delivered engaging lectures on these subjects.

A highlight of the workshop was a hands-on laboratory session conducted by Prof Maitra on the third day, offering participants practical insights into chemical reactions.

The workshop concluded with a valedictory program where delegates provided feedback on the event.
